First Aid
First aid is the immediate help we give to someone who has been injured or suddenly becomes ill. We continue that help until the person recovers or professional medical help takes over.
There are three main goals of first aid. As we go through the course, keep these goals in mind:
- Preserve life.
- Prevent the condition from getting worse.
- Promote recovery.
Workplace First Aid
Now let’s apply that definition to the workplace. Workplace first aid is the immediate care given to a worker who is injured or suddenly becomes ill while at work.
A workplace first aider uses their training, skills, first aid equipment, and other available resources to support the person until professional medical care takes over.
WAYS TO PROVIDE FIRST AID
Medical emergencies can happen anywhere and at any time. You can help by:
Calling EMS (911): Get professional emergency assistance when required.
Controlling the Crowd: Keep unnecessary bystanders away and provide space for first aid and EMS.
Managing Traffic Safely: At a road emergency, warn others of danger only when it is safe to do so. Do not put yourself in traffic.
Comforting the Person: Remain calm, offer reassurance, and keep the person as comfortable as possible.
Supporting Family and Friends: Reassure them that help is being provided.
Guiding EMS: Send someone to meet emergency responders and direct them to the exact location.
Using Your Training: Provide only the first aid you know how to perform.
